Christianity’s history is rooted in the history of Judaism, but, like all roots, it branches out into its own being. Christianity was started in 33 A.D. by Jesus Christ, believed by Christians to be the Son of God. He came to Earth to be sacrificed for the sins of Humanity, as he was perfect. God is thought of as one being, separated into a trinity that is the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Bible is the writing that Christianity is based on, and it includes the Torah, the psalms of David, and the Gospels that tell of Jesus’ life. Jesus is the most important figure in Christianity, though the prophets and disciples are important as well, but it is Christianity because of Jesus Christ. Important rituals include baptism, which happens after you have accepted Jesus Christ as your savior, and communion, which also takes Jesus into your life. Baptism is a symbolic clensing of the body so that Jesus can live there without sin, and communion asks to take in Jesus. The afterlife is Paradise, where you spend a happy eternity serving in God’s temple, simply because you are with God. God is a loving and personal God.

Islam, like Christianity, was born out of Judaism. The fundamental difference is that Jewish people believe that the chosen son of Abraham for all of Palestine to go to was Jacob, while Muslims believe it should go to Ishmael, the son had by Hagar, Abraham’s wife’s maidservant. Mohammed is said to be Ishmael’s descendant, and Muslims wanted to claim these holy lands. The prophet Mohammed experienced an angelic visitation from Gabriel, which Mohammad dictated to be the Qur’an. This is the holy book of Islam, believed to be the preexisting, flawless words of Allah. Allah, or God, is the only God, and unlike Christianity, does not manifest as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in a trinity, but as simply God. Muslims do not believe that Jesus was the son of God, but he was a prophet. They believe that Mohammed is the most important and final prophet, and his words both agree with and are more important than the previous texts, or the Torah, Psalms, and Gospels of Jesus. Some traditions of Islam include praying towards Mecca, celebrating Ramadan, reading the Qur’an only in Arabic, and making a religious pilgrimage to Mecca at some time in your life. Muslims pray toward Mecca because it is the center of their religion, and where they feel it truly started, and also is the home of the Ka’bah, which is said to have been built by Abraham. Ramadan is the most important time in the Islamic calendar, and everyone over twelve is supposed to fast from sunrise to sunset for a month. They are also to refrain from smoking, gambling, sexual activity, and drinking during the daylight hours. Because the Qur’an was originally written in Arabic, Muslims believe that it is most perfect that way, and so closest to what God intended to be read. A religious pilgrimage to Mecca is necessary if you have the physical and financial ability to, for it is the most holy place on earth. The Islamic faith expects prayer five times a day, directed by a Muezzin. In the afterlife, assuming that you have been a good Muslim, you are sent to Paradise, where life is perfect, and you are given 72 wives, including the one you had on earth. In order to get into Heaven, you must believe in one of the religions that features Abraham as one of the players, but Christianity does not count because the trinity turns it into a polytheistic religion, and to become a Muslim, you must say, “There is no God but God, and Mohammed is the messenger of God.”
